Here they learn valuable employability and communication skills, problem solving techniques, dining etiquette, and teamwork. Students also have an opportunity to meet professionals in their field in order to learn more about their career options.

A presentation of the Leadership by Example Award to a local business leader who has made a significant contribution to career and technical education. Students who attend are given an opportunity to speak and network with Council members and area business leaders. John McGlade of Air Products was honored with the 2011 Leadership by Example Award for his commitment to career and technical education. Mr. McGlade was born in Bethlehem, studied at Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School, earned a B.S. and M.B.A. from Lehigh University and then joined Air Products. Mr. McGlade was also last year’s National SkillsUSA CEO Champion of the Year. Allana Karo, Ariel Karo, and Timothy Hofstetter, from Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School, presented their national gold medal community service project. Theodore Kourpas and Nicole Mautino, engineering students from Bethlehem AVTS who spent time with Mr. McGlade, introduced him.

This award is given to 38 exceptional career and technical education students for their scholastic achievement, participation in SkillsUSA, membership and leadership positions in student organizations and sports, community involvement, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Hershey Conference Center & Lebanon Expo

Sixty-four local students won medals in thirty-nine different competitions at the SkillsUSA District 11 State Championships in Hershey, PA. Twenty-six won gold, seventeen won silver, and twenty-one won bronze medals. Gold medal winners represented Pennsylvania at the National Leadership & Skills Conference in Kansas City, Missouri from June 20 – 24, 2011.

Our 2nd Annual Culinary Challenge was held on March 22 at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute. Top culinary students from our five career and technical schools were paired with five top chefs in the area. Each team prepared an entrée and the guests and judges determined the winner. The team from Career Institute of Technology made up of Logan Terry (Nazareth Area High School), Jared Tocket (Bangor Area High School) and Chef Susan Roth from Northampton Community College placed first.
